How do I know if I need therapy?
Great question! My gut reaction is that everyone could use therapy, just for added support for all of life stressors. Having someone outside of your “circle” to confide in confidentially can be beneficial for everyone. Beyond that, if you are noticing patterns of behaviors, relationships, or characteristics within yourself that you want to change, but are having trouble changing then therapy might be helpful!
How do I know if you’re the right fit for me?
Finding a good therapist is like shopping for a car. It might take some time to find one you’re happy and comfortable with, but worth the effort. To ensure a best possible fit, note that I usually work with people that are experiencing shame, anxiety, guilt, discord in personal relationships, dealing with toxic people (past or present), history of trauma, or feelings of negative self-worth. This is an ever-evolving list and there is often overlap with many other presenting concerns, so feel free to reach out if you think we might be a good fit.
What can I expect in the first session and thereafter?
During the first session I will have you fill out some paperwork in my waiting room, just like when you start with a new doctor. Once paperwork is complete, the first session is about an hour and I will ask you some questions about your history, what brings you to treatment, and what we might be able to focus on in therapy. We will also determine how frequently you would like to meet for therapy. Sessions after the initial appointment are typically 45-55 minutes, depending on your needs and your insurance company.
Do you prescribe medication?
I do not prescribe medication. If we decide that you might benefit from medication to supplement therapy, I can assist with a referral to a psychiatric presciber or help facilitate a conversation with your primary care doctor.
